Awesome Ads

Every now and then you come across an ad that can make you smile, inspire you, or is simply fun and artsy. Below are a collection of my favorite ads at the moment.

Top humorous ad:

Take a sheet – Energy strips

Best brand positioning ads – These companies have done an amazing job with their brand positioning through these great commercials.

Pistachios – Brand positioning: “lowest calorie nut – get crackin’” / Series of quirky ads using variety of characters. I believe they have done a great job at brand recall.

Stella Artois – This commercial promotes their new “chalice can.” Product shots and art direction is excellent. Love it.

Best creative ads:

Toyota Prius – While I don’t think this ad is successful per se, actually the “people person” is a little creepy, it is definitely interesting and creative.

Mercedes Benz – Where Toyota does it wrong, Mercedes gets it right with this amazingly artistic and creative print ad:

Food Love

Food Love

There are times I actually enjoy perusing through the isles at Whole Foods examining the variety of products and packagings available. I must say I’m definitely the type of person to try new products and am always on the lookout for my newest acquired food obsessions.

So if you are curious and want to try new things, here are my latest recommendations:

Siggi’s Icelandic Yogurts

These yogurts are similar to the Greek yogurts out there but BETTER. They have these great flavor combinations like Orange & Ginger or my favorite by far Passion Fruit & Pomegranate. Thick, creamy and loaded with protein – 14 g per container.

Imagine – Organic Lemongrass and Corn Soup

If you love corn and if you love lemongrass then this soup is for you. So much flavor yet nutritious and healthy. The packaging is a great plus too, easy to open and store in the fridge, unlike canned soup.

Rhythm Kale Chips

These are soooooo good but they can be a bit messy to eat. In delicious flavors like  Curry, Nacho and Ranch, they are packed with flavor and even more nutrition – rich in powerful antioxidants, phyto nutrients and carotenoids. Kale is also an excellent source of Vitamin A, C, K, B6, Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Potassium, and fiber. The only downside? These are quite expensive – about $6 a bag.

Justin’s Maple Almond Butter – Single packs

These single serving packages are great for portion control. If you are an almond butter lover like me, then you know what I’m talking about. The maple flavor is subtle but delicious. I love to spread it on toast or with some fruit, like apple or bananas.

Organic Bistro – Thai Yellow Curry with Chicken Bowl

I’m a convenience girl. And sometimes I just don’t have time or energy to cook a healthy meal. These organic frozen entrees are fabulous! They are super flavorful and have yummy   quinoa, mixed vegetables and the curry sauce is actually really tasty! They are quite  healthy too – containing only 7 grams of fat and 290 calories.

Stay tuned for other recommendations to come!

Inspiration.

Inspiration.

To say that this story is inspiring is actually an understatement for it goes well beyond inspiration. It challenges your entire notion of what you take for granted and forces you to examine the boundaries we set up for ourselves that we think we cannot overcome. This story transcends the notion of will power.

‘Soul Surfer’ – a movie based on the true life events of Bethany Hamilton – a pro surfer who lost her arm after suffering a shark attack and despite everything, never lost faith in herself and her passion for surfing. She re-teaches herself how to surf with one arm and goes on to win national surf championships. (Note: please have a box of tissues handy, trust me, you will need it).

The sheer determination and positive attitude that Bethany has makes us all re-think our belief systems and that anything really is possible. Please watch this movie, I highly recommend it.

The Perfection Syndrome

The Perfection Syndrome

You either have it or you don’t. I, for one have been bursed by it. That’s right, bursed –the delightful combination of blessed and cursed. On the one hand, having the perfection syndrome signifies you are a determined soul, going the extra mile to make sure things get done and constantly aim higher.

On the other hand, there’s the dealing of those exhausted neurons, firing incessantly as if committing brain arson causing sleepless nights, chronic anxiety, endless glances at the mirror and a ridiculously long list of neurotic side effects.  And the most amusing part is that this idea of “perfection” or how things are “supposed” to be is a complete fabrication of your own mind.

Coming from a yogini the perfection syndrome is quite the characteristic to have had to learn to live with and adapt to. In yoga, perfection is not something that you attain, it’s something that just is and exists in each and every one of us. And through the connection of the mind/body/spirit, that quality of being present, of being centered in the now, is the remedy to completely let go of illusions, of the mindless mind chatter.

Although it’s a tough syndrome to deal with, it has taught me quite a few lessons. Interesting that is the exact dichotomy that exists. By allowing yourself to fail, to be wrong, you allow yourself to learn lessons and as a result grow.

So if you are like me that can suffer from the perfection syndrome from time to time, ask yourself this: would you rather be always right/perfect or would you rather be happy?

I have always contemplated about what superpower I would choose if I could only be granted one. There are so many to choose from! I instantly considered being able to read people’s minds, know exactly what they are thinking at any moment. But that was easily crossed off the list after considering the repercussions of such a powerful gift – manipulating others is not something I consider very positive and can easily cause a lot of distress especially if you find out what the other person is thinking is hurtful. Alas, ignorance is bliss.

Then I considered flying. Soaring through the clouds (actually feeling what cloud is!), that wonderful sense of freedom and gaiety, an ecstatic natural high. But then I wondered about the safety precautions here. I mean sure I could soar all I want but what if I got attacked by some angry eagle? Or maybe the novelty would just soon pass and I wouldn’t use my superpower as much or with the same enthusiasm.

Finally, the one superpower that I know I would absolutely positively be gaga about would be……drumroll…..yep, teleportation. I am by far the most convenient-oriented-impatient-insanely-curious person ever, always on the go and never wanting to waste any moment, so being in line or being in traffic and having to wait so long between destinations is torturous. But local destinations only scratch the surface. Consider being able to be anywhere in the world with just a finger snap? Hhmmm this weekend I think I’m going to spend it in Prague or let me have some authentic delicious pasta lunch in Rome or a surfing lesson in Hawaii or perhaps a yoga retreat in India. The possibilities are endless and the adventures extraordinary!

What would your superpower be?

On Awareness

On Awareness

Ok, can we please address the fact that we are already in the middle of October and 2010 seemed like a montage of events on steroids? What a year of transformations it has been and I couldn’t be happier about the changes that have occurred and the immense growth I feel I have undergone. It’s funny, even though 2010 has been filled with rocky times, it’s precisely during these times that our characters are tested the most and it really does boil down to perception. We can look at challenges and be deterred by them, or we can look them in the eye and come out stronger and victorious.

Even more amusing is our desire to constantly control our lives, trying to prevent ourselves from getting hurt, from undergoing any pain, from being anywhere near something that defies our comfort zone. Well, in truth, those are all illusions. Pain is going to happen if it needs to happen and there is no amount of control that we can impose that will prevent it from happening. Which is why it is so important that we take risks in life. Not taking risks because we fear we are going to be rejected, not opening up to a new relationship because we fear we are going to be hurt, not pursuing new endeavors because we fear we are going to fail….all illusionary senses of control that we bubble ourselves in as if we had a magical shield against pain.

Pain and challenges, while arduous to go through, can actually be your best friends. They can humble you, they teach you valuable lessons and they can provide you with the tools for transformation, to catapult you to a whole new person in a heartbeat. Now, while there is no amount of control that can prevent pain, there is an added clause here that aids us in the course of our lives, and that is – we can still make sound judgments with our actions and our words. Insert the infamous butterfly effect.

Wikipedia defines it as: The butterfly effect is a common trope in fiction when presenting scenarios involving time travel and with “what if” cases where one storyline diverges at the moment of a seemingly minor event resulting in two significantly different outcomes.

In other words, our actions and the words we speak severely affect the path our life will take. When our words and actions come out of a place of ego, putting ourselves first, superiority, jealousy, envy, anger or any extension of the ego, then guaranteed you will start to face obstacles in life that will test those very ego qualities. When they come out of a place of love, compassion, tolerance and acceptance, then guaranteed you will attract the same qualities to your life. So the “what if” can be manageable. We can relatively control the outcome inasmuch as we are conscious of our intentions. For as the law of attraction states, like attracts like. Therefore, if acting out of intolerance, then intolerance is what you shall receive. And so on, inserting any other intention here and that is exactly what you will invite into your life.

It all boils down to choice. We all have a choice in life: to react or not to react, to have positive intentions or negative ones, to take risks or to remain stagnant. Whatever pain and suffering we go through we must take responsibility because in one way or another we were integral ingredients in it. So as we are nearing the end of 2010 and welcoming 2011, think about your actions, think about your words, and how can you make simple changes that will plant positive seeds in your life. Remember, every thought is a seed, a potentiality that has formed inside your head and then manifests in the real world. It’s like using this simple analogy – apple seeds give birth to apple trees, not orange or mangos. Likewise, planting a seed of anger gives birth to anger and expecting a love tree to grow instead just doesn’t happen. So let’s take care of our thoughts, be aware of them, of their intention, and nurture them for they are like precious creations just waiting to be harvested.

Don’t be anal

Don’t be anal

My brother Daniel gave me the best “advice” the other day while we chatted online. Let me rephrase that, it wasn’t so much as an advice as it was a proclamation that the following should be my personal mantra: Don’t be anal.

Isn’t this true though for most of us? We sit and regurgitate in our minds every single thought, action, or step we take in different situations in our lives as though it would actually make a difference or bring any sort of benefit to ourselves. The mind constantly doing cartwheels of either what has been or what will be. Well, what about what just IS? Why do we exhaust ourselves with such chaotic thinking and why is it so hard to just let the f**k GO? Live in the now, simply flicker these other useless thoughts away since their purpose has either been served already or on the other hand, have not yet come to fruition.

“Don’t’ be anal” seems to be prevalent almost anywhere we go and does not solely apply to obsessive thoughts. Just the other day I went to the movies with my friend Sara and she wanted to get a Combo (Ok, medium drink + medium popcorn, check. No problem with that right?). But instead of the medium popcorn bag, she simply wanted to split the popcorn into two servings (small bags) so that we could each have our own. Well, the almighty powers of AMC came down with striking “analness” and retorted that there is a strict combo guideline and they would have to charge extra (the amount of an additional bag of small popcorn) for that request. Really? For the SAME amount of popcorn? So conspicuous here in anal America, this dire need of always abiding by the rules, charging more for any sort of additional trivial request, finding some way to slap you with a ludicrous sense of petty patrolling pretty much anywhere you go – a line for this, a line for that, time frame for this, percentage off of that but only if you buy 3 more of this and no not that, the list goes on and on and on.

Seriously people, why can’t we just keep it simple? My recommendation, to all of those who can relate, before you wonder off into neurotic overdrive again or encounter people who do the same, pour yourself (or them) a nice tall shot of (insert spirit of choice here) and wash away the “mindless” mind chatter. Salud. Au revoir. Now keep calm and carry on.

Lo tendrás

Lo tendrás

It’s 6:30 a.m. on a Sunday still drowsy and disoriented I peel myself out of bed. I knew today was special, but any and all expectations I had of this day would soon be exceeded as I was about to receive an immense surge of divine inspiration. Today was the day I would receive a personal blessing from a glorious enlightened spiritual guru: Swamiji Nithyananda, founder of Dhyanapeetam, a worldwide movement, based in Bangalore, India.

I drive to Miami Yogashala in Miami Beach and as a volunteer for this event I set up my computer and help with the registration process. Over 100 people of all ages and backgrounds arrive at the studio searching for something: inspiration, energy, answers, hope, affirmation and/or personal enlightenment. The energy in the room was blatant and in examining everyone’s faces, it was clear to me that faith and devotion was nestled within each individual, waiting to be shone to the universe and to Swamiji.

To get started, one’s energy field must be heightened and an open mind and heart is a definite requirement in order to connect with the abundant flow of energy that would soon circulate around the room. So in order to achieve this state, a series of meditation exercises was performed and interestingly enough, something that I have never tried before – they were all done blindfold. Why might you ask? Well in order to truly go within and to avoid distraction from outside stimuli, the blindfold assists you better in being in touch with your breath, with your own spiritual connection, and accentuates all the other senses. One particular meditation involved setting a clear intention/prayer that you would like to see manifested in your life. The key here is “clear,” not convoluted with superfluous words or as Swamiji eloquently put it: self-contradicting thoughts. What do you truly want? When you analyze that question, the answer should be pretty instantaneous. We all have desires and being in touch with those desires daily and affirming them to yourself and to the world serves to continually fill your vessel with that intention, until you practically become it and your energy field exuding to others is precisely that of which you have so carefully nurtured.

Over 100 intentions were circulating across the room that day, swirling and colliding with others as if they were molecules, small particles of personal wishes, hopes and dreams. As I set my own personal intention during this meditation, the music soaring through the background, I felt my body literally tingling as if all my cells were chatting with each other, creating a conversation within my body, only they were in dialogue not only within myself, but with every person in that room. In a seated meditating position, my body rocked back and forth, side to side with the music without even being conscious about it. I knew my body was moving, neurons in my brain were firing eliciting that response, but to me it seemed as if it was by some uncontrollable force, an unexplainable energy field.

After the series of meditations were complete, it was now time to meet Swamiji, who was being broadcasted live from India. Blindfolds were removed and in front of us was this glowing, enlightened, and enchanting figure smiling back at us and ready to shower us with his blessings. One by one, each person kneeled before his image and then looked directly into the webcam and voiced their desires. “What do you want?” Swamiji would ask, always with a divine smile across his face. As each individual proclaimed their wish, Swamiji rose his right hand and would repeat in a serene and blissful manner, “I am with you, you are blessed” or as it was the case to me, he said in Spanish “Lo tendrás.” Simple and affirming, that was all I needed, “lo tendrás.” I walked away feeling my body still tingling, the energy still circulating and rising in temperature until my face was flushed and the feeling of contentment raveled itself within every organ.

In closing, I would like to depart to you the knowledge I gained from this experience and that is: simplify and be clear about what you want to achieve, guard it within yourself and pay a visit to that intention every time you feel disconnected, anxious, angry, or any negative emotion that does not correspond to your true nature, which is one of bliss, completeness. You are a magnificent being with all universal knowledge within you, connect to it and shine it to the world, and you will achieve it – lo tendrás.

There is no place like OM

There is no place like OM

I’ve been so busy with different projects that I have neglected to write a new post last week. (Dear Blog, sorry for the slight abandonment). But I am so excited to report on the awesome little culprit that has me enchanted with all the amazing knowledge I am receiving: Yoga. That’s right, last week I started my Power Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga Alliance 200 Hour Teacher Training – taught by Fred Busch the director of Miami Yoga Shala – an amazing teacher, guru and spiritual being, who has practiced, studied and embodied yoga for over 20 years.

To provide a brief background, I have been practicing yoga since 2006, starting at Crunch gym and then moving on to the Brickell Yoga Shala studio where I was first exposed to Fred’s teaching and all the powerful instructors. And though it felt amazing, I always felt like I wanted to get a more thorough understanding of this ancient philosophy and wisdom and all its benefits. As with everything in life, timing is key. I felt like my soul was finally ready to undergo this training, to improve my practice and experience a deeper connection to yoga, but more so to myself, to life, to living with balance, awareness and bliss. To being present – the very principle of yoga.

The program entails an intense yet exhilarating discipline of practicing yoga every day, full-day weekend lectures and training covering everything from nutrition, asanas, mantras, breath, alignment and trust me, that only begins to scratch the sublime surface of this life-changing experience. It also requires to maintain a daily food log, yoga practice log, practical and written exam, a research paper, weekly homework assignments and assisting yoga classes and finally regular self-practice at home. While it seems daunting, this magnitude of knowledge and discipline is actually beyond words, only 1 week in and I have already experienced a plethora of benefits. Just last night I was sitting through my Advertising and PR management class at FIU and after 10 student presentations (yawn) my mind wondered to yoga. I kept repeating in my mind the sequences I have learned (opening, sun salutation A, sun salutation B, standing sequence, every pose, every breath, until I had covered everything in its proper order). (Yes, I know Yoga is all about being present and I should have been paying attention to class, but hey, I can’t help it if I’m in full bliss mode :) ).

So stay tuned…. The following posts should be quite interesting, as I will begin to share more spiritual experiences – the next one being this weekend, a powerful meditation and personal blessing from Swami Nithyananda.

Namaste!

These are a few of my favorite things…

These are a few of my favorite things…

Ahhh the joys of childhood. The innocence. The adventurous spirit. Curiosity. Mischief. Wonder. Imagination. Lately, for whatever reason, I have had quite a few random reminders that popped up sporadically. So to honor that, I thought I would take a trip down “old school lane” and share with you some of the things that were staples of my childhood.

1. I mean tell me who in this world did not love the Thundercats? Snarf.
2. The magical world and story of Le Petit Prince.
3. Spread the love with Pacoca Amor – this delicious little Brazilian peanut sugary square treat is irresistible!
4. The 80’s would probably not exist without New Order – bold statement I know, but c’mon, this was probably the pioneer in synth-pop and who doesn’t love Bizarre Love Triangle?
5. This movie traumatized me. I was 10 and could not come close to a drain for weeks, I nearly cried every time I needed to go to the bathroom.
6. Turma da Monica – Most popular Brazilian comic book that I could not live without, I literally had drawers filled with these.
7. Oh Atreo, I want a pet flying dragon too!
8. Just proves to you that bouncing is an ageless pastime, behold the Pogo Ball!
9. The wit and charisma of Mafalda never failed. I want to be like her when I grow up.
10. My wish was to go to see Xuxa live and ride in her spaceship!
11. If you owned a Hypercolor you were cooler than cool – and if you didn’t understand the concept, don’t worry, they wrote it on the t-shirt for you “metamorphic-color system” Aaaahhh now I get it! (Too bad they didn’t think of the effects after you wash them.)
12. “Hey you guuuuuuys” – classic.
13. Old school Nintendo revolutionized many childhoods. My ultimate favorite games: Tetris, Zelda, Punch Out, and of course Mario Bros. Finding secret 1 Ups has never been so fun.
14. Because how else are you going to get kids to eat chocolate? I know, I know! Let’s make them look like cigarettes and let’s just stick a little African American kid missing a tooth on the package. (Now why didn’t I think of that? Because you can never have enough stereotypical advertising, let’s all thank Pan)
15. I still don’t know what Domino Dancing means but hail to Pet Shop Boys – my other favorite synthpop duo.
16. Give a little love for the Care Bears!
17. Not to be forgotten, the grossest kids ever to make their mark on trading cards.
18. No joke, this was probably the most played movie in Brazil in 80s. I guess we just couldn’t get enough of Howard the Duck.
19. Is there anything cuter than the Snorkels? I think not.
20. Crack in a bag. Dip the stick. 20-hour sugar high.
21. Enough said with this one. Cruelty on kids though…everyone wanted their own E.T.
22. Because why wouldn’t you love a 40-yr-old man dressed as a boy making a fool of himself? Ahhh the lessons learned with Chaves.
23. Everyone’s favorite Italian Mouse! Topo Gigio!
24. Give me Bowie any day. In a film filled with magical creatures and an awesome labyrinth, pfff can it get any better?

So, there you have it. I hope you enjoyed a little trip down my childhood memories. Of course there is so much more, so here are a list of honorable mentions: Scratch n’Sniff stickers, Atari, the Smurfs, Madonna, anything neon, Reebok pump sneakers, Pac Man, Nerds candy, Erasure, He-Man and She-Ra, Bubbleyum gum, boogie boards, slap bracelets….I could go on but I think you got the point.

Cheers for the wonderful 80s and the innocence and wonder of childhood, may we never lose that spark within!
